Here in the United States, it’s become a tradition to have your baby do a cake smash to celebrate their first birthday. A bit weird, yes…but oh-so-cute and funny! As a photographer, I actually love photographing cake smash sessions and seeing how each child reacts to their cake. Some kids are super into the smashing aspect (like this little guy’s big brother!) and some are actually afraid of the cake!

This cake smash was a special one for me as I had gotten the privilege to photograph this little guy since he was a wee little one. It was hard to believe he was now a toddler! I always begin my cake smash sessions with a few portraits of the birthday child. It’s important to document that transition from baby to toddler before they get covered in frosting!

This one year old’s mom outdid herself with this beautiful blue ombre cake. It was *almost* too pretty to smash! Baby G wasn’t sure what to do at first, but some hidden favorite snacks stuffed into the cake did the trick. Once he got a taste of the frosting and figured out what fun it is to paint it on the floor- he was IN! In the wings, big brother was patiently (anxiously) waiting for his chance to join in the fun. When Mom gave him the go-ahead, he went right to work showing little brother how to REALLY celebrate a first birthday. After some adorable moments with big brother feeding little brother, they were begging for water and so proud of their hard work :)! Happy First Birthday Grayson!
