Beach Mini-Session Event | Boston Family Photographer
Each year, I host mini-session events 2-3 times seasonally. In the Spring, I hosted indoor sessions at Unity Farm in Sherborn. Last Autumn, I photographed families at Mistletoe Tree Farm in Stow, MA. This year, I wanted to do something a little bit different for Fall mini-sessions. The beach is one of my favorite spots to visit in the Autumn and it just happens to be a gorgeous backdrop for family pictures.
Six families joined me at sunset on the second weekend in September. My favorite thing about the beach is the way it makes people feel. People feel instantly relaxed in the salty air and breeze. Being barefoot doesn’t hurt either! These six families came ready to play and make some wonderful family memories with their kiddos.
We did not get one of those perfect sunsets but the overcast skies had beautifully interesting clouds that evening. Someone asked me once if it is boring to photograph six families in a row in the same location? The answer is no. Every family is so diverse in their ages and interests that it naturally leads to a different feel for each of their sessions. The first two sessions (and the last) all had two children, 4 and under. Sessions with young kiddos like this are active and playful, full of exploration, tickling, and chasing. You can’t expect anything more from 1-4 year olds! When kids get a bit older, parents are able to expect a bit more cooperation and posing.
Is your family a good candidate for a mini-session?
These short sessions are popular because they can be an affordable and quick way to get a couple great family photographs. But mini-Session timing can also be tricky for families. If you are looking to capture a wide variety of combinations or want specific posing, a full session is a better choice! If you have kids who are super active or are slow to warm up to a new person, a 15 minute mini-session is probably not a great fit. Mini-sessions like this are a perfect fit for families with older kids, go-with-the-flow kids, and kids who have worked with/know the photographer in the past.
