Breakneck Hill

Breakneck Hill Reservation in Southborough is a gorgeous hill full of trails for hiking, dog walking, and photographing! It is one of my favorite spots for family photographs because of the natural backdrop and the direction of the sunset. In the Spring and Summer there is lots of growth and blooms. During Autumn, wispy brown grasses provide a great textured backdrop for photos.

Weather

One of the most challenging parts of being a family photographer is the weather. New England weather is finicky, especially in the Autumn months. On this particular evening, my clients and I had been watching the forecast closely. There was 0% chance of rain until around noon when suddenly a chance crept in. We went back and forth what seemed like a million times about whether we should reschedule. In the end, we figured for a 30% chance of rain an hour after our scheduled time, it was worth the risk!

A Wet Experience

I arrived at Breakneck Hill a little early and was happy to see my clients there too. Quick moving dark clouds were blowing around so we began right away! The skies opened up on us exactly 28 minutes after I began shooting. The four of us ran down the hill as fast as possible and jumped into our cars, soaked. That is the very first time I have ever been rained on during a session, but it was totally worth it. The images we got in those first 28 minutes are some of my favorites I’ve taken all season. Moody skies can sometimes be more interesting than cloudless skies, and let’s face it– toddlers will be at their best for those first 28 minutes anyways.

Bottom line….don’t trust the weather and take risks for cool skies. Don’t underestimate what you can capture in the first twenty minutes!
