As the State of Massachusetts moves to Phase One of reopening post-pandemic lockdown, outdoor sessions are at the forefront of every Boston Maternity Photographer ‘s mind. How do we ensure the safety of ourselves and our clients while still documenting these fleeting milestones?

What Does a Socially Distant Session From a Maternity Photographer Look Like?

Well, it looks a lot like a “normal” maternity session! During your session I shoot with two cameras and two lenses just like before. I use my longer lens to get “up close” without physically getting up close and my wide angle lens to capture the bigger picture. While I might not be able to literally position you, I will direct you with my words and actions to ensure connected imagery.

The Beginning of Your Maternity Session

This will look a little different than the past. I will be masked and will greet you from a distance. No hugs or high-fives! We will walk from our meeting spot to our session location maintaining that distance. I recommend shooting on weekday evenings or very late/early in the day on weekends to avoid crowds. Once we are set up, I will be un-masked so that I can give clear direction from 6+ feet away. If I need to come in closer for any reason, I will re-mask!

Maternity Session: In the Middle

In the middle, I’ll be doing what I have always done! Capturing that beautiful belly, the connection of you and your new baby. Photographing your family snuggling you and your belly and getting those environmental shots too! After trying out socially-distanced maternity photography, I realized that I don’t actually come within 6 feet very often. Once or twice in the past, I may have physically positioned you, but usually I am standing back capturing the moment.

The Client Perspective: Do I Need to Bring Anything Different?

For seated shots, I am instructing clients to bring a favorite quilt or blanket so that there is no sharing of materials. Other than that, your smiling faces are all that’s needed!

At The End

Once we get everything we need, I’ll re-mask and we will walk out together and say goodbye (from afar!). You can expect your images in your inbox within a couple weeks and a sneak peek in between :).
