If you’re a new parent, it can be hard to look at google and figure out which photographer is the right one for you. Every Boston based photographer seems to offer different price points and styles of newborn sessions. How can you tell which newborn photographer is the right fit for your family? That’s a decision you’ll have to make for yourself, but in the meantime, I can chat more about what newborn sessions with me are like!
During my lifestyle photo sessions, I focus on four main categories:
Let’s chat about each one of these categories!
Out of all the categories, this one is the most important for new parents to take a look at. Generally speaking, there are two types of newborn photography: lifestyle and posed. Posed photography is typically done in a studio with props, backdrops, accessories, and intricate posing. Posed newborn photographers go through training and become certified in specific posing and wrapping like this: CLICK HERE. If this is the style that you are attracted to, we are not a good fit!
I do not have a studio, nor am I trained in this style of wrapping and posing. I can not, and will not attempt to replicate any of these poses. Instead, I do a style of photography called lifestyle newborn. Lifestyle newborn is lightly posed/guided and focuses on very simple and natural images of your new baby. They may be awake or asleep, and I typically use either your bed or the crib as the backdrop. I love bringing in texture and interest with your favorite swaddle blanket or a parent’s hand. Overall though, the focus is on a clean and simple, well-lit portrait of your baby!
What is a family portrait that focuses on connection? Let’s start with what I typically don’t focus on during newborn sessions: portraits with everyone looking and smiling. I do try to get 1-2 frames with everyone looking and smiling as I know grandparents, in particular, love these shots. For me, though, these very posed images don’t bring back any feelings when you look at them. The majority of my focus during my newborn photoshoots is to create images that evoke emotion. I want to capture the joy on your face when you look at your baby and the way you cradled your newborn to your shoulder. This means that I spend the majority of the session telling you to look at each other and your baby, not at me!
Images of your new baby with their big siblings or big fur-siblings are also high on my priority list. But you won’t find me working hard to get a toddler to sit perfectly still and smile at me! I’m after images that show your toddler snuggling their new baby, awkwardly and proudly holding them, and marveling at their new family member. This might happen for only a split second, but don’t worry, my camera is as fast as your toddler! The same goes for fur-siblings. If you have a very well-trained pet, we might be able to get that classic portrait of them snuggling. A lot of times though, your pup might be a little freaked out by the newest member of the family. In that case, as with toddlers, sibling images might have to happen “in arms”. This means that the parents will foster the connection between their pet/sibling and the new baby and I’ll focus in on that in camera!
Last but not least are detail shots! This is basically a fancy way of saying that while photographing your new family, I’ll be taking some close up images of your baby’s features. The way their head fits into your hands, their tiny wrinkly hands and feet, and those cute little ears. If your newborn is sleepy, this may happen while they are laying down for their solo portraits. If they are fussy or more awake, this happens in parent’s arms! All my sessions flow based upon your baby’s temperament.

"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
"Our images are so special and really captured our joy and the sweet personality of our little girl. Lyndsay did a great job going beyond the typical posed shots and making our photos feel authentic. We will treasure them forever."
