Family photo weather is probably the topic I get asked about most as a photographer. Weather-related questions I get range from what type of weather is grounds for a reschedule, which month is the driest, and when the best foliage is. The answer to all of these questions is never black and white! If you ask any outdoor family photographer what the biggest source of stress and anxiety is in their job, it’s always the weather.

Family Photo Weather Is Not In My Control

Guys, if I had *ONE PHOTOGRAPHY SUPERPOWER* it would be to control when it rains. In my dream world, it would never rain during sunset and we’d have golden light every night. However, in real life, this just isn’t possible. Photographers have to make a salary enough to support themselves and their business and this means that not every session will have sunshine!

Try Not To Stress About the Weather You Get

Here’s the secret I want you to takeaway from this post: it’s not all about the weather. Yes, golden light is beautiful. But overcast skies are beautiful and cool too! Your family’s love and connection will be the focus of your images, not the weather. All the images in this post were on overcast evenings and I love them all, and have them in my website portfolio! I am skilled in shooting with all types of skies and the best we can do is embrace the family photo weather we get!

Weather Reschedules

As your photographer, I absolutely am going to do my best to get you the best weather that my schedule permits. In the busiest months of the year (September-November) there isn’t a whole lot of flexibility for family photographers. Let’s talk about things I most likely won’t be able to reschedule for:

• humidity
• chilly weather
• hot weather
• wind
• overcast skies
• lack of foliage
• wet ground from an earlier rainstorm

Now let’s talk about the things I do reschedule for:

• rain at the time of your session
• more rain at the time of your session
• tons of rain at the time of your session

Family Photo Weather In Conclusion: When Do We Reschedule? For Rain!

Going into this Autumn season, just know that booking an outdoor session means that you’re going to embrace the weather you get! Outdoor sessions are unpredictable and are beautiful no matter what’s happening in the sky. We will reschedule if there is rain predicted for the time of your session and that’s about the only reason!
