Oh, did you think this was going to be about the pandemic and staying home to stop the spread? PSYCH! It’s actually about choosing to stay home for your Boston family photo session this year!
If you haven’t done a family photo session recently, this might seem like a silly reason to put as number one. I can assure you, this is a major point of stress for families! I don’t know about you, but my kids don’t have any “nice” shoes. Partially because they ruin everything that goes onto their feet within a wear or two….and partially because it’s been a pandemic! Parents put so much thought into what everyone will wear that they sometimes forget the shoe aspect! Nothing ruins a perfectly planned family outfit like neon sneakers with mud all over them. How do we avoid the last minute scramble to secure nice shoes for everyone?
Choose your home! Embrace bare feet on everyone and put your shoe worries aside!
I talk often about how much the weather stresses family photographers out. But let’s talk about the flip side of weather worries…as a client! More than likely, the parent who booked this shoot factored in LOTS of things when they chose the date. Daycare or school schedules, sports schedules, family visits and vacations, bed and nap times…the list goes on. When weather messes up the carefully selected date, it can be a headache to reschedule!
This at-home family session took place on one of the nastiest of Boston weather days. Rain, cold…you get the picture. Can you tell? Nope. So pour that extra cup of coffee, smile at the rainy weather, and snuggle up with that family of yours.
This is the truth regardless of the age of your kids. Are older kids more confident in new environments than toddlers? Sure. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t even MORE comfortable at home. My favorite thing to capture during Boston family photo sessions is a family’s authentic personality. That personality comes through a lot more easily if your kiddos are in their comfort zone. After this session, mom asked me if her kids were TOO wild…the answer is always NO from me. Energy and excitement is what makes an image amazing– not docile forced smiles!
Before you scoff at this and the difficulty of picking up your house to prep for a photoshoot…hear me out! When you get the family ready to leave to go to a photoshoot away from your home, you have to anticipate ALL THE THINGS. Babies spitting up or diaper explosions. Kids falling in mud. Snacks. Water. Sunscreen, bug spray, strollers, treats, car toy distractions. Worries about traffic and directions and being on time.
When you have your session at home, you pack nothing. You get dressed and commute to your family room. Do you have to lightly pick up a couple key rooms? Yes. But I promise it’s actually probably easier!
This might seem silly, but it’s true. While you and your spouse are getting photos of just you two, or Mama and her one child are taking photos…your other child(ren) can’t escape. They can’t run for water, the road, that puddle around the corner, or that enticing mud you see out of the corner of your eye. They are stuck in their house…and usually happy to wander off with a toy when they aren’t in front of the camera.
Have you guessed it? The top reason that people usually tell me that they don’t want their family photos at home is because…their house isn’t “good enough”. It isn’t big enough, light enough, clean enough, well decorated enough. I am here to tell you that this simply isn’t true. While the house in these photographs is truly stunning, *most* homes I take pictures in are ordinary homes. It’s the subjects that make an image extraordinary!
"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
"Our images are so special and really captured our joy and the sweet personality of our little girl. Lyndsay did a great job going beyond the typical posed shots and making our photos feel authentic. We will treasure them forever."
