When I was growing up, and even fifteen years ago, newborn photography meant posed and stiff and always in a studio. Over the last decade, lifestyle newborn photography has grown in popularity and with it, the concept of ‘fresh 48 sessions’. Fresh 48 sessions take place within a newborn’s first few days of life and happen in your hospital room.
As a Boston Fresh 48 photographer, I often get asked what this type of session entails. Think about getting your newborn photos done without the stress or pressure of any external things. There’s no house to clean, no outfits to worry about and no schedules to uphold. You haven’t gotten back into the “real world” yet and are still in that amazing cocoon of your tiny hospital room.
When I shared some stories about Boston fresh 48 photography on instagram recently, I asked what stopped people from booking. The number one reason people listed as to why they didn’t book one is because they didn’t feel they’d look their best. I’m going to let you in on a little secret… you’re going to be absolutely obsessed with your new baby in their first days of life. You’re going to take a million cell phone photos and you’re probably not going to like any that your partner takes of you. These fleeting moments are when you need a professional more than ever. Someone who knows how to pose you, what angles to use, and how to focus and capture the absolute adoration you and your partner have for your new baby.
Babies come when they come and not on anyone’s schedule but generally we have an idea of when they might be coming. Each Boston area fresh 48 client that I take has time blocked off on my calendar surrounding their due date. During this time, I make sure to stay local. As we get closer to the due date, my clients and I communicate any updates with one another that might impact delivery date. My fresh 48 clients agree to stay in the hospital for a minimum of two overnights (what is offered for vaginal deliveries) to ensure that we can work together to find time during visitor hours for the session. Luckily, couples don’t typically have a lot going on within the first 48 hours so scheduling isn’t a problem!
This has absolutely happened in the past and is a valid concern! In the case that your fresh 48 session is unable to happen, we simply apply the session fee towards an in-home newborn session in the future. Once you’re home, settled, and feeling healed and ready to schedule, we’ll find a mutually available date.
Yes, of course they can join! Like all of my newborn sessions, fresh 48 photography sessions are about your family’s love for one another. This means the whole family is more than welcome…or you can just do you and your new baby. It’s your call! As for the size of the room, Boston hospital rooms aren’t known for their spaciousness. However, if you’ve been in a session with me before, you know that I am always getting everyone as close as possible. I want to layer all those siblings right onto the bed with you for a family snuggle pile. That’s where the magic happens! Check out this sweet Boston fresh 48 photo session with big sister here.

"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
"Our images are so special and really captured our joy and the sweet personality of our little girl. Lyndsay did a great job going beyond the typical posed shots and making our photos feel authentic. We will treasure them forever."
