When booking annual family photos in Boston, most people prefer Spring, Summer or Fall dates. When you’re looking for pregnancy photos, however, you don’t have much of a choice! Maternity photos, sometimes referred to as pregnancy photos, typically happen when the pregnant person is between 32 and 36 weeks pregnant. This sometimes means that the pregnant couple is looking for wintertime. The first reason you shouldn’t skip winter maternity photos in Boston has to do with golden hour. Golden hour in the Winter is *so gorgeously golden* because the position of the sun during the Winter months. This results in stunning light! But the best part of all, if you have a toddler big sibling, is that golden hour is in the late afternoon and NOT at witching hours or bedtime like April-October. Happy kids plus golden sun? Sign me up!

But isn’t everything dead in the Winter? How do you ensure you get snow?

It’s true that the leaves have fallen and the grass is dead in Boston in the Winter. This is where you need to rely on your photographer’s expertise. I have been taking Winter pregnancy photos in Boston for close to 9 years and I know which locations look good in the Winter. Characteristics that look good in the Winter vary greatly from what I look for in April or September. In this particular location, the marsh surrounds makes it impossibly buggy when bugs are alive. Luckily, they aren’t alive in December! If we have snow, amazing, but if we don’t, that’s okay too.

Parks, beaches, and trails are deserted even on the weekends!

One of the hardest things about finding great locations in the peak season in Boston is finding spots that are gorgeous and are also NOT mobbed with people. In the Winter, hardly anyone is out in the cold which means easy parking and all the best unobstructed views and angles.

Winter Pregnancy Photos in Boston mean your choice of wardrobe colors!

One of the other best parts of Boston is that the “dead” backdrop reads during golden hour as browns and tans and golds….aka, neutral colors. This allows you to truly dress in a way that highlights your tastes and personality. If you’re a neutrals person, go for that. If you’re into bold red, wear that show-stopping dress. There are no neon greens or warm Fall tones to have to take into consideration. Everything goes!

Your Photographer is most flexible in the Winter!

This might be one of the best pros about a Winter session. Because family clients *usually* choose other months, photographers in Boston have the most golden hour availability from January through March. This means that I am able to really work with each client to ensure we get one of those gorgeous Winter sunsets and aren’t stuck with a dreary day!
