Let’s chat about extended family sessions! Extended family sessions include more than one nuclear family being photographed at the same time. My standard family sessions are low-key and relaxed, intimate in setting. When you add in siblings, grandparents, and cousins, a whole different dynamic happens. Parents can feel added stressed, kids can feel extra excited and rambunctious, and outfit planning for 10+ people can feel like an insurmountable task. I typically have four main goals during my extended family sessions. The first is to get a picture of everyone together. The second is to capture the cousins alone together. The third, to photograph grandparents with their grandchildren. Lastly, to give each nuclear family some time in front of the camera alone. Everything else is icing on the cake!

This family knocked their family session out of the park…or should I say beach! We met in the adorable town of Scituate at the vacation home they had been booking for years. I love when clients have special meaning to the locations they select for their sessions. Not only will they cherish photographs of their whole family together, the locations pictured will drum up years of vacation memories. Despite the chaos of having the whole family together, everyone had such a good time together. We laughed, some kids cried (it happens!), Grandpa played and loved on his grandkids, and each family got some snuggle time.

We began on the rock beach, added some fun trampoline pictures in the middle, and ended strolling down the road this family strolls down together year after year. This whole family was in total vacation relax mode and it shows! The promise of an ice cream date post-session didn’t hurt for the littles either!
