Last October, I met the most adorable red-headed toddler and her family, clad in Autumn plaid  for their outdoor family session at Farm Pond Park in Framingham. When they contacted me this Summer to book a different kind of session for this Autumn, I was thrilled! They were expecting a second child and booked a lifestyle newborn session at their Framingham home.

I have mentioned before that I love photographing newborns. There is something so special about being welcomed into someone’s home to photograph this major change to their family dynamic. It’s an incredibly life-changing event whether it’s your first baby, your second, third, or fourth! Having a photographer into your home in the first 5-14 days after delivery can seem overwhelming. Here are 5 tips for a successful session.

Tips.

1. Don’t stress about the things that don’t matter. I know that seems obvious, but truly don’t. If your laundry room is overflowing and your bathrooms are messy– ignore them! Neither of those spaces will matter during your newborn session.
2. Focus on reducing clutter in your master bedroom, your family room, and the new baby’s room. Removing clutter from the ground and side tables will go a long way to having the focus on your family during your session!
3. Don’t worry about vacuuming or deep cleaning anything! I promise that stuff won’t show up on camera.
4. If your toddler/big sibling has a meltdown or is bouncing off the walls, it’s okay. Their world has just been turned upside down and they all act like this. Have some special snacks ready and we will manage to get some great pictures!
5. If you’re a newly post-partum Mama, dress comfortably! Maxi dresses, tunics and leggings, and long sweaters flatter your body and keep you comfortable which is the most important thing!
6. Bonus Tip: If your baby is fussy, try not to stress. I have photographed some kids who sleep the whole session through, and others that cry…ALOT. The best thing about a lifestyle session is that we won’t force babe into anything. If he/she is fussy, we can get everything we need while your baby is being snuggled!
