Recently on Instagram, I shared a graphic in my stories called “Ask Your Photographer”. It featured many questions for the audience to ask such as: my favorite lens, best business book, and my dream celebrity client (it’s the Obamas, in case you were curious!). One of the more serious questions was to talk about your photography journey. I expand a little bit on my background and the style of photography that moves me on my About page but I thought I’d talk a little bit more about how I got started.
Seven years ago in January 2014, I gave birth to my first son. For the 6 years prior to then I had been working in the hospitality/event sales market. I was on maternity leave from January-March and had every intention of returning to my full-time sales job. Three sleepless months passed with a colicky baby who never slept and I felt like a wreck. The thought of commuting an hour + each way and working full-time felt completely insurmountable. I quit my job with two weeks left of my maternity leave. My husband and I sold our house and moved to a small apartment to begin life with me as a stay-at-home mom.
Around the one year mark of being a stay-at-home mom, I felt…lost. I had gone from being the family breadwinner to spending my days covered in spit-up, un-showered, and struggling to get anything done. I needed something to be an outlet. Something that was for just me when I was not in mom mode. Enter: photography.
Photography has always been a part of my life. My parents bought me my first DSLR as a college graduation gift in 2008. Back then, I was all about landscape and travel photography. I took these on our trips to Italy in 2010 and 2012.
Becoming a mother gave me a different subject to focus on: my baby. He was really my first foray into photographing a human subject. I quickly grew to love it and one day thought….could I make this into a business?
In the Spring of 2015 when my son was 15 months old, I decided to go for it. My husband and I researched, saved up, and purchased a used Canon 6D and a Sigma Art 50mm. This was my first full-frame camera!
The first year, I started out practicing on moms and babies at the playgroups I was a part of. Eventually, referrals, offers to other local parent/family organizations, and auction donations brought in new clients.
That first year I photographed around 40 families and made $6,000. Each year, I have worked hard to increase those numbers and continue to learn how to be a successful and profitable photographer and entrepreneur.
XOXO- Lyndsay
"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
"Our images are so special and really captured our joy and the sweet personality of our little girl. Lyndsay did a great job going beyond the typical posed shots and making our photos feel authentic. We will treasure them forever."
