Picture this…you’ve made it through the long dark Boston winter. Dug yourself out of three feet of snow and are finally thawing internally from the many sub-30 degree days. Suddenly it’s early April and the daffodils are blooming and you realize…oh my gosh, I am already 32 weeks pregnant!
While Spring maternity photos might be the last thing on your mind during the long, dark Winter days, it’s important to start thinking (and booking) about your Spring maternity photos before the weather is actually nice. Spring in Boston is a fleeting season and absolutely exquisite when you hit the timing right!
March:

Spring in Boston is like coming out of a Winter cocoon into total bliss. And the best part is that the bliss happens in waves. Late March and early April begin with daffodils and magnolias. Mid April through late April is the magic of cherry blossoms. Late April into early May is apple blossom heaven that transitions into dogwood trees in full bloom.

April:

By late May, you’ve passed the blossoming tree stage but the grasses are filled out, and gardens are lush.
May:

June is the ideal time for arboretum and field locations…gorgeous warm temperatures without the humidity of July and August to contend with.
June:

Because Spring’s many waves of beauty are fleeting, ideally the dead of dark cold Winter is the ideal time to be booking your Spring maternity photos. I know it might feel weird to be thinking about outdoor photos in January and February, but the top photographers fill up very early– especially if you’re targeting a blossom session!
Mamas who are expecting their first baby will want to target between 30-35 weeks and second time (or third, etc) mamas should plan for anywhere from 28-34 weeks. These timeframes are not set in stone, but they are the weeks when pregnant people generally have a nice round bump and are not yet too tired/swollen. This 4-6 week ideal spread gives you just enough flexibility to customize the best location and look that you’re hoping for.
Due to the low humidity we experience during Boston springtime, the ideal outfit involves layers. The great news is that layers and draping photographs beautifully! The beginning of golden hour is often warm, with the temperature dropping as we approach sunset. Flowy dresses paired with a long open sweater or light blanket/wrap offer maximum options to keep everyone comfortable.
Spring is full of soft new greens, pastel blooms and clean beautiful light. Colors that complement spring tones are:
May:

Spring is all about blossoms and new growth as our landscape finally reawakens from it’s Winter slumber. Choosing a photographer who is well-versed in Boston springtime and trusting in their recommendations will result in the best photos.
Public gardens and green spaces are filled out and lush by later May. Blossoming tree locations help those earlier Spring dates (think early April-early May) make up for the lack of green growth….who cares about long grass when the trees are magical?! Fields are absolutely gorgeous by late May and early June. City or coastal spots are wonderful year-round!

Would it surprise you to learn that the number one concern potential clients have is that they ‘don’t know what to do’ in front of the camera? I am going to let you in on a little secret. Even though my work looks natural and candid, I guide my clients through every aspect. No one (well, hardly anyone!) is a model and naturally knows what to do in front of the camera. The goal is images that *look* candid but I promise I guide you every step of the way into the best, most flattering poses!
By the time we arrive at our session, we’ve also worked together on outfit support for both you and any potential partner or children joining us, as well as selected the ideal location. Part of my job involves staying on top of what’s blooming and where. I want all my clients to have the ideal backdrop for their Spring maternity photos!
If you’re due this Summer or late Spring, now is the time to book your maternity photos! Reach out today to learn more. And if you’re not expecting a baby but just love some gorgeous baby bump pictures, follow along on instagram to see more!

"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
"Our images are so special and really captured our joy and the sweet personality of our little girl. Lyndsay did a great job going beyond the typical posed shots and making our photos feel authentic. We will treasure them forever."
