Spring in Boston is pure magic for family photos. The light is soft, the trees are blooming, and everything feels fresh and full of possibility. But let’s be honest — figuring out what everyone should wear? That can feel overwhelming fast

So let’s simplify it.
The very first step in styling your spring family photo session is this: choose YOUR outfit first, mama. Yes, you.
This is the hardest part — and once it’s done, everything else falls into place. When you feel confident and comfortable, it shows in every photo. After you’ve chosen your look, I’m more than happy to help coordinate the rest of the family around it.

Here’s exactly how to make it easy.
For moms, I almost always recommend maxi dresses or skirts. They photograph beautifully, create natural movement, and allow you to sit, kneel, hug, and scoop up little ones without fussing. The way fabric flows in the breeze adds so much life to your images.

If dresses aren’t your thing, go for jeans paired with a flowy top. Think oversized sweaters, soft knits, or linen-style blouses with texture and movement. A romper or overalls are also fantastic options — they stay in place and don’t require constant adjusting.
What I don’t recommend? Tight or low-cut styles. Family sessions involve lots of bending, sitting on the ground, and holding kids. If you’re tugging or adjusting the whole time, you won’t feel relaxed — and relaxed is what we want.
Boston spring evenings can still be chilly — especially early in the season. I know it’s tempting to jump straight into light, airy spring outfits, but cold kids are never happy kids.
Plan to layer.

Sweaters, light jackets, cardigans, and textured layers not only keep everyone comfortable but also add visual depth to your photos. Layers are both practical and beautiful — win-win.
Spring sessions look best when we stick to earth tones, neutrals, and soft seasonal colors.
Think:
Instead of bright white, choose ivory, off-white, or cream — they photograph much more softly. I also recommend avoiding black and neon shades, as they can feel harsh and distracting in natural outdoor settings.

When it comes to patterns, less is more. A good rule of thumb: one bold pattern and one small or muted pattern within the family. This keeps things visually interesting without overwhelming the frame. If mixing patterns feels intimidating, don’t worry — I can absolutely help with that.

Texture brings photos to life.
Lace, ruffles, buttons, layered sweaters, tights, bonnets, overalls, suspenders, hats — all of these small details add dimension and warmth to your images. Texture helps neutral outfits feel rich instead of flat.
Spring light paired with beautiful textures? That’s where the magic happens.

A few small details can truly elevate your images:

Comfort always comes first. If your child feels good, they’ll be able to move, play, and cuddle naturally — which is exactly what we want.
Once I see the colors and style you’re leaning toward, I can help you coordinate the rest of the family so everything feels cohesive, effortless, and true to you.
Spring family sessions in Boston are about connection, not perfection. When you feel confident in what you’re wearing, you can focus on loving your people — and that’s what makes the photos timeless.
If you’re ready to start planning your spring session, let’s do this. 🌸
"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
"Our images are so special and really captured our joy and the sweet personality of our little girl. Lyndsay did a great job going beyond the typical posed shots and making our photos feel authentic. We will treasure them forever."
