There is a very specific magic that happens in a hospital room about 24 hours after a baby arrives. It’s a mix of adrenaline, extreme exhaustion, that new baby smell, and that weird, quiet hum of the hospital hallways at Brigham and Women’s or MGH. You look at your partner and it’s hard to believe that you’re actually holding the person who was growing on the inside for the last nine months.

As a Boston Fresh 48 photographer, I know exactly what’s going through your head: “I’m going to have dark circles under my eyes. I’ll be wearing a giant pad. My hair hasn’t seen a brush in two days. Do I really want a professional photographer there?”

The short answer? Yes. Absolutely.
One of my favorite in-hospital newborn sessions involved a mama who had an emergency C-section after 30 hours of labor. She almost canceled. She felt “undone.” But when she saw the photos of her husband’s hand next to that tiny hospital bassinet, and the way her baby’s flaky toes tucked into the scratchy hospital blanket, she cried. She didn’t see the exhaustion; she saw the beginning of her family’s story.

Still not convinced? Let’s explore the other benefits of doing fresh 48 photos…
The beauty of a Fresh 48 session is that the “styling” is already done for you. Whether you are delivering at Newton-Wellesley, Beth Israel, or Mount Auburn, you don’t need a floral robe or a coordinated outfit—unless that makes you feel like a goddess! Many moms choose to be in pajamas, leggings and a tee, and some even rock a hospital gown.

Since we’re working in a hospital setting, flexibility is our best friend. Whether you are in the heart of the city or the MetroWest suburbs, I make the process seamless.

As new parents quickly discover, babies change at a terrifyingly fast rate during their first year. By day five, their faces have already started to shift and fill out. My goal as a lifestyle newborn photographer is to capture them while they still have that “womb-fresh” look—the curled-up posture and the way they still fit perfectly in the crook of your arm.

Pro-Tip: If you have older siblings, this is the best time to capture their very first meeting. Seeing a “big brother” or “big sister” peer into that plastic hospital bassinet for the first time is pure magic.
In ten years, you won’t remember the hospital food or how tired you were. But you will have these images to remind you of the sheer strength of your body and the quiet, sacred cocoon you built in that little room. I had my first baby boy before I was a photographer and I am *so sad* that I didn’t know what fresh 48 photos were. There is nothing I treasure more than those first photos from my second and third babies and I wish I could go back and do my first over again!

…have I convinced you yet?!

"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
