Picture this: I arrive at your home for your newborn session. The light is soft, the baby is freshly fed, and the couch is perfectly lived-in. Everything is set up for those warm, cozy, connected photos you’ve been dreaming about.

And then I see the dad in leather dress shoes, slacks, and a button-down tucked into a belt.
I’ve seen it more than once. And every time, I think the same thing: this is going to be a tough sell.
Not because the family isn’t beautiful. They absolutely are. But because the outfit is sending a completely different message than the session is supposed to.

If you’re planning an in-home lifestyle newborn session and you’re not sure what to wear, this post is for you.
Here’s the thing about in-home newborn photography: the whole point is that it feels like your life.
Your home is the backdrop. Your couch, your bed, your morning light – that’s all part of the story. And when the clothing doesn’t match the environment, the images feel off. Not bad, exactly, just… disconnected.
Think about it this way. If you looked at a photo of a family in their Sunday finest – dress shoes, tights, formal wear – standing in the middle of a field, it would feel strange. The setting and the styling are fighting each other.

The same thing happens when a new dad looks like he’s heading to a board meeting while mom is curled up on the bed with a newborn. The vibe just doesn’t land the way it should.
Formal clothing has its place in newborn photography. It works beautifully in a studio setting. But at home, on your couch, surrounded by your real life? It sticks out.
I always tell my clients: dress how you want the session to feel.
Most people hire me because they love the relaxed, candid approach. They want cozy, connected, sweet newborn photos. Not stiff, formally posed ones.
To create that look, we use your home because it’s a comfortable space. We use relaxed prompting instead of rigid posing. But the last piece of the puzzle is dressing the part.

And here’s what that doesn’t mean: it doesn’t mean throwing on the sweatpants you’ve worn six times this week. It just means comfortable and intentional.
A good gut check? Think about what you’d wear if your neighbor was coming over to drop off a meal. You’d want to feel put together, but you wouldn’t be in dress shoes and tights. That’s exactly the energy we’re going for.

There’s a difference between relaxed and thrown together. You want outfits that feel easy and comfortable but still look intentional.
Great options include:

You don’t need to be in identical outfits, but you do want the family to feel cohesive. Stick to a soft, consistent color palette. Neutrals, muted tones, and earthy colors tend to work well together and don’t compete with the baby or the home environment.

Leave these out of the in-home session wardrobe:
If you love a more formal look, a studio session might be a better fit for that vibe. For home sessions, we want ease.
One of the biggest misunderstandings I see is that families assume “looking good together” means “dressing up.” It doesn’t. Intentional and coordinated does not equal formal. The new approach to lifestyle photography is about leaning into who your family actually is – and that usually means bare feet and clothes you can breathe in.

The images from your newborn session are going to live on your walls. They’re going to be in frames and albums for years. You want to look back at them and feel like that’s us – not like you were playing dress-up.
The goal of an in-home lifestyle session is authenticity. Real connection. The way your family actually exists in your space, with your newest person. Clothing that matches that energy makes everything else fall into place – the light, the posing, the mood of the whole session.

When families come to the session dressed in a way that fits the environment, the images are warmer, more connected, and honestly just better. It’s one of the simplest things you can do to set your session up for success.

Because you’ve got enough to think about with a new baby. What to wear shouldn’t be one of them!

"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
