Fresh 48 or “birth space” photography sessions are a new trend in the photography world. They differ from traditional posed or lifestyle newborn sessions because they happen in your birth space within the first 48 hours of life. I am a huge fan of in-home newborn sessions but adore Fresh 48 sessions even more.

People who haven’t heard of a Fresh 48 session tend to initially balk at the idea. After all, who wants to be photographed 48 hours after giving birth? You do. Trust me, you really do. Being 5 years removed from my first birth, those initial hours of meeting my firstborn son are a complete blur. Sure, I have some grainy cell phone pictures in terrible hospital lighting, but nothing great. I didn’t take pictures of his skinny little legs in their hospital bracelets or his freshly cut umbilical cord stump. We didn’t think to photograph the view from our hospital window where we became parents for the first time. I don’t have any pictures of my husband and I holding my son together, staring in wonder at the new life we had *just* created.

The most common inquiry I get for Fresh 48 sessions is from second (or third, or fourth) time moms. Because they tend to understand, in hindsight, how fleeting those first hours of meeting your new baby are. So fleeting that your baby seems different even a couple weeks later at your newborn session. A tiny bit of the wonder and amazement has diminished when you leave the cocoon of your birth space and head home.

Fresh 48 sessions are cozy, relaxed, and joyful. No one has to worry about cleaning up or looking perfect, plus your baby is calm, sleepy, and snuggly and needs only their teeny tiny diaper. They are wrinkly and red and oh-so-newborn. Memories fade, but photographs don’t. Consider a Fresh 48 session for your next birth– you won’t regret it!
