Let’s talk about what happens when you have cold weather for your family photography session. In the Boston area, it’s a harsh reality for later Autumn sessions. Earlier this week, I talked about the gorgeous golden light and other advantages of a November family session. With that gorgeous light, however, can come low temperatures. The photographs you’ll see below were taken on the second weekend in November which was my second-to-last outdoor family session of the year.
The weather in November in New England is variable. One day it’s 60 degrees and the next it’s a high of 31. As a rule of thumb for mid-to-late November, plan for it to be cold. While it was not bitterly cold on this date, we had some biting winds that made it uncomfortable when you weren’t moving around. When I say plan for it to be cold, I mean bring outerwear that you don’t mind being in your photographs. Adults can “suck it up” for a little while in cold weather without coats but young children cannot. They get grouchy and uncooperative when they are cold! This family did an awesome job of bringing a nice neutral-ish green coat for their son and a great patterned set for their daughter.
You’ll most likely have a bit of time at the beginning of the session to capture pictures without coats on before your kids are too chilly. This is when I’ll try to get a few good full family shots of those outfits you worked so hard to coordinate. My standard family sessions are very active, but I make sure to keep you moving even more when it’s cold outside.
The other thing that can help is to do your session at your home or in a location where you can pop indoors to warm up. We began this session at my clients’ home and then warmed ourselves in the car as we headed to a local park to finish up. The bitter winds ended our session a little more quickly than usual but I was still able to get everything I needed. My focus is to get everything you’ll want at the beginning of your session and everything else is icing on the cake!
The moral of today’s story is: don’t fret if you have a November date. Embrace the good thing about November and prepare for possible cold weather. Make sure everyone’s outerwear coordinates with their outfits. Wear long johns and warm socks and please don’t forget the toddler snacks…!

"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
"Our images are so special and really captured our joy and the sweet personality of our little girl. Lyndsay did a great job going beyond the typical posed shots and making our photos feel authentic. We will treasure them forever."
