As a Metro-West Boston newborn photographer, I work in a large variety of homes. With my proximity to the city, I could be in a small apartment one day and a large suburban home the next! Frequently, my apartment/condo clients have fears about not having *enough* space for their newborn photo sessions.

Are Any Metro-West Homes Actually TOO small for a lifestyle newborn session?

The short answer? No. The only deal-breaker for me would if your entire home lacked any windows. Since this is not legal, I don’t think we will have a problem ;). A professional newborn photographer will be able to work with whatever space you have! All of the images in this blog post were taken in one apartment bedroom. Luckily for me, it was full of gorgeous natural light. But even if you aren’t quite as lucky in the light department, we can make it work!

How to Maximize Your Small Space

1. Let as much light as possible into your chosen space. If you have heavy drapes that don’t stay open well, this may mean removing them for your session.

2. Be open to a variety of poses, including laying down together. Allowing your photographer to shoot from many different angles will help you have a full and diverse gallery of images.

3. A rolling bassinet or mini-crib that can be rolled into the light of the window helps get those classic crib shots without having a nursery space!

4. Pick a couple different swaddles or throw blankets to add some diversity in colors and tones.

Photographers: Do Small Spaces Intimidate You?

• Remember that all you need is ONE good window. If you plan to use one room, ask your client when that room gets the most light.
• Remember to shoot from above, below, to the side, pull-back, and up close. You’ll be surprised what variety you can get within one room!
• My preferred focal length for the majority of my newborn sessions is a 35mm. However, you’ll never catch me at a session without my 24mm. It has been essential in many smaller spaces, as well as at my Fresh 48 sessions!
• Don’t forget to use a variety of light types. Backlit, side light, and direct light can change the entire feel of an image taken in the exact same space.
