Picture this: it’s late February, it’s raining outside, and your at home maternity photography session is happening anyway – no weather app anxiety, no bundling up, no worrying about frozen fingers. Just you, your home, your coffee, and a photographer who’s going to make your living room look like it belongs in a gallery. That’s exactly what an at-home maternity session can be. And honestly? For a lot of expecting moms, it ends up being the most relaxed, most them experience of the whole pregnancy.

If you’ve been on the fence about whether your home is “ready” for photos, or whether an at-home session can actually look stunning, keep reading. I’m going to walk you through what really makes these sessions work.
This past winter, a former elopement client reached out to let me know she was pregnant and wanted to do maternity pictures. She was due in early spring, so we were looking at late February into March. I love winter outdoor maternity sessions – I know Boston’s landscape well and I know how to help clients layer up and make it work. But this client knew exactly what she wanted, and it wasn’t that.
She wanted warm. She wanted relaxed. She wanted a bare belly style of shoot that just made more sense indoors.

When I walked into her home that day, it was raining outside and nobody cared. We moved through their space comfortably. Her dogs made an appearance in some shots and were given their own little break for others. She changed outfits. She sipped coffee. She was barefoot. The whole vibe was exactly what she was after – and that ease showed up in every single image.
That’s what an at-home session can give you that an outdoor session simply can’t replicate in the same way.

Here’s something I want to be upfront about: bedroom window light is gorgeous, but it’s just one option. A home has so many more interesting spaces to work with, and I’d be doing you a disservice if I just set up in the same corner every time.
When I arrive, I walk through the space and look for where the light is hitting well. I also ask you where you actually hang out. Where do you feel most like yourself? Sometimes the answer surprises people.
That client I mentioned above had just moved into a new place – the nursery wasn’t even set up yet. We worked in the primary bedroom, the living room, and the kitchen. Yes, the kitchen! And it looked beautiful.

Here’s how I think about it:

Let me address the things I hear most often, because they hold a lot of people back from booking the session they actually want.
I hear this constantly, and I want you to hear me clearly: photographers are experts at angles.
The same way I find your best light and your most flattering angles, I do exactly the same for your home. What you see in my portfolio or on Instagram looks like a parade of beautifully designed spaces – but what’s actually happening is that I’m getting creative in every single home I photograph. Gorgeous photos never show what’s right outside the frame. Clutter, mismatched furniture, an empty nursery – none of that is a barrier. It just means I’m doing my job.

This one comes up a lot, especially from clients who are planning both sessions. And I completely understand the concern – but here’s the thing: your gallery is going to look totally different because your family is going to look totally different.
The backdrop is the supporting cast in your photos. It matters, the same way a well-styled outfit matters. But what’s front and center is you – your emotion, your connection, where you are in this chapter of your life. That’s what makes every session unique, even if the location is identical. A maternity session and a newborn session in the same home will feel like two completely different stories, because they are.
An at-home maternity session isn’t a backup plan for when the weather is bad or when you don’t want to be cold. For a lot of expecting moms, it’s actually the ideal choice – especially if you want images that feel intimate, personal, and completely relaxed.

Your home is where this baby is going to come home to. It’s where your mornings happen, where your relationship lives, where your story is unfolding right now. That’s worth documenting. And you don’t need a perfectly staged space to make it happen. You just need a photographer who knows how to see the beauty in what’s already there.
If you’ve been hesitant because you thought your home wasn’t “photo-ready,” I hope this shifted something for you.
If you’re expecting and thinking about maternity photos, I’d love to chat about what an in-home session could look like for you – whether you’re in Boston, Newton, Natick, Sudbury, or anywhere in between. I’ll help you figure out timing, what to wear, and how to make your specific space work beautifully.
Reach out here and let’s start the conversation. Rain or shine, your home is ready. I promise.

"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
