Most people booking a branding session have one image in their head: the perfect headshot. Great hair, great outfit, great light. Done. But if that’s all you walk away with, you’re leaving a lot on the table. A strong brand session goes way beyond a profile photo – and once you understand what you actually need (and why), the whole process starts to make a lot more sense.
Yes, you need an updated LinkedIn photo. Yes, it matters. But here’s the thing: the images that are going to build real connection with your audience, bring in inquiries, and make people feel like they know you before they ever reach out – those are not headshots.
The headshot gets someone to pause. Everything else gets them to stay.
When clients come to me focused only on that one profile photo, I gently redirect the conversation. Because a good brand session gets into the heart and story of your brand. It shows who you are, not just what you look like.

You’ve heard it before: just be yourself, show your personality, be authentic. And that’s genuinely good advice – it’s just vague enough to be almost useless when you’re actually planning a session.
Here’s what it really means in practice: why should someone book you instead of your competitor?
People want to connect, in a human way, to the person they’re buying from. If you love dogs, love to hike, or are a thrift store connoisseur in your free time – talk about that. Show that. Those are the details people grip onto. That’s how they find common ground with you.
No one wants to scroll an Instagram feed and feel like they’re being sold to the whole time. They want to know who is behind the business. What you do when you’re not working. How you work. What snacks you’re eating at your desk. Who you collaborate with.
Building connection online is about going deep into why and how you do your work – and then thinking about what you want to share to bring people into that world.

One of my clients, Jillian, came to me at the very beginning of launching her wellness and slow-living brand. She knew she needed photos for her new website, content for social media to start building a following, and images that represented where she was taking her business in the future.
That meant we had a lot of ground to cover – visually and strategically.
We brainstormed how to represent everything from slow, simple daily routines for women, all the way through to Jillian’s vision for hosting retreats down the line. Yoga. Hiking. Her connection to the outdoors. Her approach to everyday life. All of it needed to feel cohesive, intentional, and unmistakably her.
That’s what a real brand session looks like. Here’s a breakdown of what to think about for your own:

Here’s the thing about brand photography: it’s a long game. The photos you walk away with are going to live on your website, in your Instagram grid, in your email newsletters, and in the pitch decks you send to potential collaborators.
When those images tell a full, layered story – not just “here’s my face” but “here’s who I am and why I do this work” – that’s when the connection happens. That’s when someone lands on your page and thinks, she gets it. I want to work with her.
That’s the return on investment from a session done well.
The prep work matters. Thinking through your brand story before you show up matters. Coming in with a clear sense of what you want to communicate – and being open to brainstorming how to show it visually – makes all the difference in what you walk away with.

If you’re building a new website, refreshing your social presence, or finally committing to showing up more consistently online – this is the year to get your brand photos done right.
I work with entrepreneurs and brand builders in the Boston area to create galleries that go well beyond the basic headshot. We plan it together, we think through your story together, and you walk away with images you’ll actually use.

Because the headshot is just the beginning.

"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
