• A carefully developed editing style – My edits are true to life with a pop of color. Every image I deliver is one I’m genuinely proud of. Boston’s seasons are beautiful – spring greens look different from fall greens, and that’s exactly how it should show up in your photos.

Look at the full gallery, not just the highlights

Anyone can post their three best shots. Ask to see a full client gallery – or look for blog posts that show a complete session. That’s where you’ll see consistency in editing, variety in posing, and how a photographer actually works with real families (not just perfectly cooperative ones).

Ask what’s included in the session fee

Some photographers charge a lower session fee and then price prints or digital files separately. Others include everything. Neither is wrong, but you need to compare apples to apples before you assume one is cheaper.

Notice how they communicate before you even book

This one matters more than people expect. Do they answer your questions clearly? Do they give you a sense of what to expect? A photographer who is organized, responsive, and helpful before the session is going to be that same person on shoot day. That’s not small.

Think about what “good enough” actually costs you

If you book a $300 session and the photos don’t turn out the way you hoped, you’ve lost that money and that stage of your child’s life. Newborns change in weeks. Kids grow out of phases fast. It’s worth thinking about what it would cost to not get it right.

• Think of it as an annual investment, not a one-time splurge. Many of my families book once a year and plan for it like they would any other family priority. Most photographers (myself included) are more than happy to customize a payment plan.
• Book at the right time. In Boston, Fall books up fast. If you want October, start reaching out in the Spring. Same goes for newborn sessions – those are best done within the first month, so reach out before baby arrives!
• Be upfront about your budget on the call or email inquiry. I would much rather have a real conversation with you than have you guess your way through my pricing page. If something isn’t the right fit, I’ll tell you honestly and brainstorm ways that we may be able to work together.
