If you’ve ever opened three browser tabs comparing photographers and felt more confused after than before, you’re in exactly the right place. Pricing for family photography in Boston runs the gamut – from a few hundred dollars to well over a thousand – and from the outside, it can feel nearly impossible to figure out what you’re actually paying for. I’ve had this conversation more times than I can count, and I want to give you a straight, honest breakdown of how to think about photography pricing before you book anyone (including me).

Here’s something I see happen all the time: a first-time parent starts searching for a newborn photographer, pulls up a few websites, and sees prices ranging from $300 to $1,500+ for what appears to be the same thing. Sunset session. Edited gallery. Delivered online. So… what gives?
This is one of the most common starting points for clients who eventually find their way to me. And I get it. When you’re staring at a screen trying to make sense of a big range like that, the differences aren’t obvious yet.
The hard part is that the gap in value often only becomes clear after the session. That’s when you notice whether the light was handled well, whether the poses felt natural or stiff, whether the edit made your family look like yourselves or like a washed-out version of a stock photo. I’ve had so many clients come to me after a not-great experience elsewhere, ready to invest in something different. I love being that next step for them – but I also wish they’d had better information going in.

When people ask me why my pricing is on the higher end, I always say: look at what’s actually included. And I don’t mean the deliverables list – I mean the work that happens before, during, and after your session that you might not even think about.
Here’s what my pricing reflects:
That’s what separates a $300 session from a $1,500 one. It’s not a logo or a fancier website. It’s hours of unseen work and years of building real skill.

If you’re in research mode right now, here’s how I’d suggest thinking through your options:
Anyone can post their three best shots. Ask to see a full client gallery – or look for blog posts that show a complete session. That’s where you’ll see consistency in editing, variety in posing, and how a photographer actually works with real families (not just perfectly cooperative ones).
Some photographers charge a lower session fee and then price prints or digital files separately. Others include everything. Neither is wrong, but you need to compare apples to apples before you assume one is cheaper.
This one matters more than people expect. Do they answer your questions clearly? Do they give you a sense of what to expect? A photographer who is organized, responsive, and helpful before the session is going to be that same person on shoot day. That’s not small.
If you book a $300 session and the photos don’t turn out the way you hoped, you’ve lost that money and that stage of your child’s life. Newborns change in weeks. Kids grow out of phases fast. It’s worth thinking about what it would cost to not get it right.

Here’s the practical version:
The right photographer for your family is out there. The goal of this post is just to help you walk into that search with clearer eyes.

If you’ve been on the fence about booking, or if you’ve had a less-than-great experience before and you’re ready to try something different, I’d love to connect. I work with families all across the Boston area – from Newton to Natick to Sudbury and beyond – and I bring the same level of care and preparation to every single session.

"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
