If you’re a photographer hustling right now to fill your Fall calendar, I see you. And I want to let you in on something: while most photographers are scrambling to book September in June, I’m already fully booked through the first week of December. With a waitlist. This isn’t luck, and it’s not some complicated marketing funnel. It’s a repeatable system built on a few core habits that I’ve refined over the years. Let’s dive into how I do it…

Here’s where I’m going to be blunt: your social media reach probably isn’t doing what you think it’s doing. For most photographers right now, organic reach on Instagram and Facebook is rough. If you’re relying on it as your primary way to stay in front of clients, you’re leaving a lot of bookings on the table.
Your mailing list is where the real action happens.
This is the foundation of everything I do. A strong, well-nurtured email list means you’re landing directly in your clients’ inboxes – not fighting an algorithm to be seen. Start building it now if you haven’t, and protect it like it’s your most valuable business asset. Because it is.

Trick question: when do I start talking about Fall bookings?
Always. I talk about Fall all the time.
At the close of Fall 2025, I was already planting the seed. I told every single person in my audience to get on my mailing list so they’d have first dibs on the following year. I told them exactly what to expect: emails in late Winter/early Spring about how my Fall process works, what sessions I offer, and when my waitlist opens.
And then I followed through. Starting in late February, I sent a series of emails walking people through everything. How it works. What’s included. What session type fits different families best. When spots open. All of it.
That consistency builds anticipation. It gets people waiting for your emails instead of deleting them.
One more thing: don’t ignore inquiries just because you’re already booked. Even when I’m sold out, I respond to every inquiry and personally encourage them to join my list for next year. That one small habit keeps my pipeline full season after season.
And here’s a practical win – if you’re using an email provider like Flodesk, you write those emails once. Each year you make small tweaks and send them again. Your clients start to learn your rhythm and look forward to it. They know when to expect your release, and they show up ready to book.
It can take someone 21 touchpoints before they make a decision. Until your client base knows your process well, talk about it more than feels comfortable. Hype up your release. Seriously.

This one surprises some photographers, but it’s become one of the most valuable parts of my Fall process.
For my busiest months – September through November – I pre-select all the locations and dates. I choose them. Clients pick from what’s available.
Some photographers worry clients won’t like this. I’d push back on that completely. We are the experts. We are the ones out there day in and day out knowing what each location looks like, how crowded it gets, what the foliage peaks like, when festivals or events are happening nearby. We are taking the guesswork away from families who genuinely don’t know the difference between a location that looks incredible in early October versus late October.
This is a service. Treat it like one and talk about it like one.
When clients experience a session at a location I’ve expertly chosen for that specific time of year, something shifts. They stop fixating on those 10 “perfect foliage” days in mid-October and start trusting the full season. That opens up your calendar in a huge way.

The last piece of the puzzle is friction. Specifically, removing all of it.
I put real time into building out my online calendar. Every available date gets its own entry with the location, a description of what the scenery will look like that time of year, and the rain backup plan. Clients can browse, read, and book on their own – no back-and-forth emails required.
The easier you make it for someone to say yes, the more yeses you get. That’s it. That’s the whole lesson.
If clients have to email you to ask about dates, wait for a reply, ask about locations, wait again – some of them will just give up. Or book someone else while they’re waiting. An intuitive, well-organized booking calendar tells your clients that you’re professional, prepared, and worth every penny.

Each one of these pieces reinforces the others. Your mailing list gets people in the door. Your consistent communication builds excitement and trust. Your pre-selected locations position you as the expert (because you are). And your seamless booking process closes the deal without the friction.
The result? A calendar that fills up fast, a waitlist that keeps building, and a client base that comes back year after year because they know exactly how you work and they love it.
This isn’t about being salesy or pushy. It’s about showing up consistently, communicating clearly, and making it genuinely easy for the right clients to book you.
If you’re a photographer looking to tighten up your booking process and build the kind of calendar that doesn’t stress you out, start with your list. Get an email system in place. Start talking about your next season now – yes, even if it feels early.
And if you’re a family looking to book a session with me? Get on my mailing list so you’re first to know when spots open. I promise you won’t want to miss it.
"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
