If you’re planning a brand photoshoot and your first thought was “but where would we even do it?” – you’re not alone in that spiral. Location is almost always the first thing clients fixate on, and I can understand why. *Most* clients do not feel that their place of work represents the marketing aesthetics they are going for. But here’s what I’ve learned after shooting countless branding sessions: the location isn’t just a backdrop. It’s part of the story. And when you get it right, it does a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

Almost every branding client I work with brings up location before anything else. It’s usually framed as a worry: “I don’t have a beautiful office,” or “my workspace isn’t photogenic,” or “should I just rent a studio?”
For some clients, a studio genuinely is the right call. If you’re just starting out and your only workspace is a corner of your basement that doesn’t reflect your brand yet, a studio can give you a clean, controlled environment to work with.
But for most businesses? On-location is where the magic happens.
On-location doesn’t mean one thing. It can be an office, a storefront, a coffee shop where you take all your calls, or an actual job site. It depends entirely on what you do and where you do it.

Here’s a great example of this in action. I worked with Ella, a real estate developer who focuses on Beacon Hill and spends a lot of time on active construction sites. We shot on location – in the neighborhoods she works in and on the job sites where she actually conducts business.
Could we have rented a clean, pretty studio? Sure. Would those photos have felt like her? Not even a little.
When your audience sees you in the environment where you actually work, something clicks for them. It looks credible. It looks real. It tells the story of what you do without you having to write a caption explaining it.
There’s another bonus here that I don’t think gets talked about enough: being in a familiar space helps nervous clients relax. If you’re someone who gets stiff in front of a camera, being on your own turf – surrounded by the things you work with every day – makes a real difference in how you show up.

There’s a misconception I clear up before almost every shoot, so let me just say it plainly here.
Most clients assume a brand session is mostly headshots. Not the stiff, shoulders-up-white-backdrop kind from ten years ago – but the modern, polished version where you’re smiling directly at the camera. And yes, we do capture those. They have a place…your About Me page, showing your face on your home page, LinkedIn, and social media profile pictures.
But those images are not what carry your marketing.
The photos that actually do the work for your business are the behind-the-scenes ones. The ones that show:
These storytelling images are what stop someone mid-scroll. They’re what make a potential client think “oh, she gets it” or “that’s exactly what I need.” A great headshot tells people who you are. A lifestyle branding session tells them why they should trust you.

Here’s where brand photography gets genuinely tricky when it comes to location discussions.
The goal is always to marry two things that can pull against each other: aesthetics and authenticity. We want the location to be relevant to your actual life and business (that’s the authenticity piece), but we also want it to reflect your brand’s look and feel.
It’s a real balance. And it doesn’t always come together on its own.
A skilled brand photographer knows how to find the best angles in any space, use light to your advantage, and pull out the strongest visual elements of wherever you are. Your location doesn’t have to be Pinterest-perfect. It has to be yours – and it’s my job to make it look its best.

If you’re thinking about booking a branding session, here’s what I want you to take away from this:
The images that make your audience feel connected to you aren’t the ones where you look the most perfect. They’re the ones where you look the most like yourself, doing the thing you’re actually good at.

If you’ve been putting off a brand shoot because you’re not sure your space is “good enough” or you don’t know where to do it – let’s talk. Finding the right location for your session is part of what I do, and it starts with understanding your business, your clients, and what you actually want your images to say.
You don’t need a perfect space. You need a photographer who knows what to do with the one you’ve got.
Get in touch here and let’s figure out where your story should be told.
"To say that I love each one would be cliche and a total understatement, but seriously... She nailed it. Being a photographer myself, I am very picky and searched dozens of photographers before coming back to lyndsay and booking her and I am so glad I did. I can't even remember the last time I hired a photographer and was this in love with the images and unable to pick just a few favorites. Thank you, lyndsay, for making the photo session easy (with 3 kids), fun and providing this mama memories for a lifetime.”
